c.1225, from O.Fr. silence 'absence of sound,' from L. silentium 'a being silent,' from silens, prp. of silere 'be quiet or still,' of unknown origin
do any of you ever take a day of silence, or set aside a block of quiet-time for yourself?
living alone, i think i already steep into the spaces shaped by what i choose to say or not, but something about the intention of silence feels different. it challenges our tendencies to fill awkward/bored/lonely moments with 'noise,' and it brings a new power to words.
i was fortunate to have the opportunity to hear khandro rinpoche speak in nyc some years ago. here is an article she wrote discussing the importance of our intentions and the tough love approach she offers her students.
enjoy your day.
